Having been given the ok to continue with spinal injections, Tuesday found me back in hospital waiting for the Baron to arrive.
So tired was I he had to wake me up to sign the consent. Never a man of long conversations he gruffly said that the week before h9e had been held up in theatres by the surgeon before him. Two hours late..he muttered his indignation. Hope it’s better this week. Somehow trying to cheer him up I mumbled a reply ” I’ll see what I can do ”
As if..what a plonker am I.
Lovely ward sister I’ve known for years was looking after me. How we chatted and put the world to rights. She also made sure I knew surgery was indeed delayed, that I was last on the list and that the Wi-fi had died. Stupid little details make such a difference.
Then it was the dreaded walk to theatres..always seems like doom laden steps to the unknown.
The Baron likes to do the cannula himself. So once in theatre, which is utterly fantastic. All those people. Everyone seems to know where or what they are doing whilst still being incredibly soliticious to me. Anesthetist gets the oxygen on, the monitor leads are stuck here and there, the blood pressure cuff had to be on my leg, out the way. Then the Baron mumbles ‘ sharp scratch’ as he digs the cannula in. Only this time it went wrong and he tried to flush the vein but just filled a syringe with bright red blood. Leaving that one he gently tapped the other arm. Same thing happened. He was apologetic and worried about bruises. Some lovely nurse hovered closer asking if I was ok. I was and somehow still fascinated by this weird process.
Eventually, as my bruises now confirm, he found a way in…the anaesthetist took over, sedation was ordered up, and a second, and that I’m afraid is the last Inremember.
Apparently he used X-ray to guide. He injected facets, discs and nerve root block. I awoke in the car being driven home. Remembering nothing. But apparently I had been talking, Baron had visited and nurses had discharged.
Getting home at midnight, I realised my hands and arms were bloodied and bruised my spine had tape across it, and the initial numbing stuff was wearing off. Just as well, I would not be sure anything had been done.
It’s weird stuff aneasthia and or sedation.
Let’s hope the steroids begin to kick in.
Meanwhile…better go to sleep…again!
